It's fascinating to me how many fashion bloggers have turned into celebrities in their own right. It happened when the infamous Bryanboy got signed by IMG Models. It happened when Aimee Song of Song of Style and Kristina Bazan of Kayture landed on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list of influential young people this year. Somewhat insidiously, fashion blogging has transformed from the mundane taking of candid street style shots to conjuring an alluring cult of personality and social media maelstrom around yourself.
It's no secret that the work that this new wave of blogging demands is enormous. It's no longer just about awkwardly posing in front a tripod and posting photos every couple of weeks - blogging is a 24/7 job that demands you constantly update your followers on every outfit you wear, every place you go, every cupcake and aesthetically-pleasing macaron you eat. Perhaps then it is no surprise that the standards for blog photography have also risen in tandem throughout the years. While mirror selfies still pervade Instagram, many bloggers have been dabbling in editorial photography and transitioning into the studio space for more experimental shoots. Perhaps I had the same intention (or probably because Philadelphia had subzero weather at the time), but after four years of blogging, I finally took the step from street to studio.
With careful curation now an inherent part blogging process, the line between the street style shot and the traditional editorial photograph blurs. That is why established media institutions have been capitalizing on the blogger realm, with fashion magazines and websites striving to include blogger voices on their pages. I'm proud to announce that I have recently partnered up with Harper's Bazaar Hong Kong to be an official blogger for their website and to pioneer their new street style app, Harper's Bazaar Lookbook, for iOS and Android. The app features a curated feed of fashion, lifestyle and images from style influencers in the city, and enables you to share images of your own straight from your smartphone.
